Japanese Tea Ceremony — Cultural Exchange with Japan Culture Trust
“Tea teaches us to find peace within simplicity, and to meet each other with respect.”— New Zealand Tea Institute
Introduction:
On 22 July 2025, representatives from the New Zealand Tea Institute (NZTI) were invited by the Japan Culture Trust to attend a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony in Remuera, Auckland. This event followed NZTI’s earlier Chinese Song Dynasty-style tea ceremony, continuing a meaningful cultural exchange between New Zealand and Japan.
Through this experience, both institutions deepened their appreciation of chanoyu — the Way of Tea — and its shared philosophy with Chinese cha dao in pursuing harmony, respect, purity, and tranquillity.
Event Highlights:
Hosted by the Japan Culture Trust, the ceremony presented the elegant rituals and serene spirit of Japanese tea culture.
NZTI guests included Chairman Ms. Chen, Board Member Ms. Ten, CEO Mr. Raymond Hill, and tea master Ms. Jing Jing.
Japanese hosts, including Mr. Masa, warmly welcomed the delegation and shared insights into the aesthetics of wabi-sabi and mindfulness in tea practice.
The exchange fostered a deeper connection between the two organisations, building mutual respect through the art of tea.
